Banning RV Park Camping: 10 Things You Should Know Before You Visit

Planning a camping trip to Minnesota's beautiful Kettle River region? Whether you're a seasoned RV traveler, a family looking for your next outdoor adventure, or someone who's never spent a night under the stars, Banning RV Park has something special waiting for you.

We're tucked away in the heart of Sandstone, Minnesota, and we've helped countless campers create unforgettable memories over the years. But before you pack up the camper and hit the road, here are 10 things you absolutely need to know about staying with us.

1. We're Just a Quarter Mile from Banning State Park

This is the big one, folks. Banning RV Park sits just 0.25 miles from the entrance to Banning State Park, that's about a five-minute walk. You get all the convenience of a private campground with full amenities while being steps away from one of Minnesota's most stunning state parks.

Banning State Park is famous for its rugged sandstone cliffs, the roaring Kettle River, and miles of hiking trails through dense pine forests. When you stay with us, you're not just close to the action, you're practically in it.

No more driving 20 minutes to reach the trailhead or fighting for a spot in packed parking lots. Roll out of bed, grab your coffee, and you're already there.

2. Our Full-Hookup RV Sites Make Life Easy

Let's be honest, roughing it is great, but sometimes you want a hot shower and a fully charged phone. Our full-hookup RV sites give you the best of both worlds: nature all around you and modern conveniences at your fingertips.

Each site comes equipped with:

  • Electric hookups

  • Water connections

  • Sewer hookups

Whether you're pulling in with a massive Class A motorhome or a compact travel trailer, we've got a spot that fits. And because we're a smaller, family-run park, you won't feel like you're camping in a crowded parking lot. There's plenty of space to spread out, set up your camp chairs, and actually enjoy the outdoors.

Check out our park map to get a feel for the layout before you arrive.

3. No RV? No Problem, We Have Cabins

Not everyone owns an RV, and that's totally okay. Our cozy cabins are perfect for families, couples, or groups of friends who want a camping experience without the tent or trailer.

You'll get a roof over your head, a comfortable place to sleep, and easy access to all the same adventures that RV campers enjoy. It's camping made simple, just show up, unpack, and start exploring.

4. You Can Rent a Trailer from Us

Here's something that surprises a lot of first-time visitors: we offer trailer rentals right here at the park. If you've been curious about the RV lifestyle but aren't ready to commit to buying one, this is your chance to test the waters.

Our rental trailers are set up and ready to go. All you need to bring is your gear, your groceries, and your sense of adventure. It's a fantastic option for families who want to try something new or for anyone whose RV is in the shop.

5. Wolf Creek Falls Is a Must-See Hike

If you only do one hike during your stay, make it the trail to Wolf Creek Falls. Located inside Banning State Park, this waterfall is one of the most photographed spots in the region, and for good reason.

The trail winds through towering pines and along rocky outcrops before opening up to reveal the falls cascading into a pool below. It's not a super strenuous hike, so it's great for families with kids or anyone who wants a rewarding trek without climbing a mountain.

Pro tip: Go in the morning before the crowds arrive, or visit after a good rain when the falls are really flowing.

6. The Willard Munger State Trail Is Right Here

Bikers, listen up. The Willard Munger State Trail passes right through our area, and it's one of the longest paved trails in the entire country. We're talking over 70 miles of smooth, scenic riding from Hinckley all the way to Duluth.

Whether you're into leisurely family rides or serious long-distance cycling, this trail delivers. The section near Banning RV Park takes you through beautiful forests, past historic sites, and over old railroad bridges. Pack a lunch, fill up your water bottles, and spend a day on two wheels.

Don't have a bike? No worries, there are rental options in the area, or you can bring your own and store it safely at your site.

7. Whitewater Rafting on the Kettle River Is an Absolute Blast

Want to kick your adventure up a notch? The Kettle River runs right through Banning State Park, and it's one of the best spots in Minnesota for whitewater rafting.

Our friends at Hard Water Sports offer guided rafting trips that are perfect for beginners and experienced paddlers alike. You'll navigate exciting rapids, float through calm stretches, and see the park from a completely different perspective. It's the kind of experience that everyone in your group will be talking about for years.

The Kettle River is a state-designated Wild and Scenic River, so you're paddling through some seriously protected and pristine wilderness. Book a trip early in your stay, you'll probably want to go twice.

8. We're Open May 1st Through October 31st

Timing matters when you're planning a camping trip. Banning RV Park is open for seasonal camping from May 1st to October 31st. That gives you a solid six months to find your perfect window.

  • Late spring brings wildflowers and rushing waterfalls from snowmelt

  • Summer is prime time for swimming, biking, and family vacations

  • Early fall delivers stunning foliage and cooler hiking weather

Each season has its own charm, so whether you're a summer sun-chaser or a fall leaf-peeper, there's a great time to visit. Just remember that weekends fill up fast, especially around holidays, so book ahead if you can.

9. We're a Quick Drive from Hinckley

Need to grab supplies or looking for a little off-site adventure? The town of Hinckley is just a short drive away. You'll find grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations, and the famous Tobie's, home to some of the best caramel rolls in Minnesota (seriously, don't skip it).

Hinckley also has the Hinckley Fire Museum if you're interested in local history. It tells the story of the devastating 1894 fire that swept through the region and shaped the community that exists today.

Being close to town means you never have to worry about running out of essentials, but you're still far enough away to feel like you've truly escaped.
